KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) - Police are investigating a deadly shooting involving one of their own.

Police said an officer came face-to-face with two men armed with guns. What happened next, police say, led the officer to fear for his life.

Authorities said it all started about 3 a.m. Sunday when two customers hanging out at the Power and Light District walked up to some officers in the area asking for help.

They pointed out a group of men nearby who they say had just stolen their cell phone.

"That alerted the officers to a small group of males. When they tried to make contact with them, two of them ran. The officers began a foot chase with the two," Capt. Tye Grant said.

As officers were chasing after them near 13th Street and Grand Boulevard, another officer coming from the other direction confronted the men in the parking lot.

That is when the officer said he saw both men were carrying guns.

"They were ordered to drop the guns. One of them did, the other suspect did not ... refused the order. At that point, the officer felt like he was being threatening and the other officers were being threatened, and fired and shot the suspect," Grant said.

Police have identified the suspect as 24-year-old Ryan Stokes. He was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

As the investigation continues, police say this is not the outcome they ever want to see.

"Most officers go through whole careers, 25 years, without having to fire their weapons. Something they don't want to do. It weighs heavily on the officers, I know that," Grant said.

The officer involved in the shooting is on paid administrative leave as the investigation continues to determine if the shooting was justified.
