MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) -- The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is using cutting edge technology to help reconstruct crime scenes in the courtroom.

Agents got their hands on the equipment in Manhattan Wednesday for training.

The $220,000 Leica camera takes 50,000 measurements every second and the KBI is using it to recreate incredibly realistic panoramic views of crime scenes.

The KBI has one of only two in the state. Members of the Crime Scene Response Team practiced with the technology at the National Guard Amory in Manhattan.

"The Leica scanner that we have is tremendously beneficial for us to be able to demonstrate to prosecutors and juries alike the data that we can capture at crime scenes. We can present the information to them so that they can view it in a 3-D manner and it really goes a long way in terms of helping them to understand what it is we see at crime scenes as opposed to looking at 2-D digital photographs," said Senior Special Agent Katie Whisman.

"We can do a video fly through of the scene or we can use it to basically walk a jury through a crime scene and present the evidence in court," added Senior Special Agent Cory Latham, team leader of the Crime Scene Response Team.

The data collected can either back up or contradict statements by suspects and witnesses.

"If they say well I was standing in this location and I was able to observe this we can go back into our point cloud and place a camera at the level that the person was, height wise, and be able to show exactly what he or she would have been able to see had they been standing in that location," Whisman added.

Criminals are to thank for the equipment. It was purchased with money seized during investigations. No taxpayer dollars were used.
