MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) – A Kansas State University architecture professor charged in a nearly five-year-old rape case has entered a not guilty plea and wants his case to be heard by a jury.

William Yankey, 28, was arraigned in Riley County District Court Monday and requested a jury trial which has been set for February 27th and 28th at the Riley County courthouse.

Yankey was arrested at his home on Colorado Street in Manhattan on Tuesday, September 11, 2012.

He is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Interior Architecture and Product Design at K-State. K-State officials could not provide details on Yankey's tenure with the university at the time of his arrest.

Police say the alleged sexual assault took place in the northwest part of Manhattan on December 8, 2007. The victim is now a 26-year-old woman.

Officials say a warrant was issued for Yankey’s arrest but authorities have not said what new information or evidence resulted in his arrest several years after the crime.

Police say Yankey knew the victim. He would have been 23 at the time and the victim would have been 21.

Assistant Riley County Attorney Barry Disney would only say that the victim was an “acquaintance.”

Court documents indicate that it is alleged that the she was “unconscious or physically powerless” during the sexual assault.

Yankey is out of jail on bond as he awaits trial.
