Judge Delays Hearing In Topeka Homicide Case

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ A Kansas judge has postponed a preliminary hearing for a man charged with intentionally using his vehicle to kill an 18-year-old Topeka woman.

Online court records show Shawnee County District Judge Cheryl Rios Kingfisher plans to set a new hearing date for 21-year-old Dustin Leftwich on Sept. 6.

Leftwich has pleaded not guilty to kidnapping and murdering Brenna Morgart, whose body was found in a field near Topeka on May 25.

A preliminary hearing on whether prosecutors have enough evidence to go to trial had been scheduled for Sept. 6. Kingfisher had planned to consider pretrial motions Friday.

But The Topeka Capital-Journal reports the defense asked to delay the motions hearing. Kingfisher reset it for Sept. 6, pushing back the preliminary hearing.
