Johnson Co. Catches Up With Motor Vehicle Backlog, While Shawnee Co.'s Persist

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - One county is almost caught up on the backlog caused by the new software that has clogged motor vehicle offices.

The Kansas City Star reports Johnson County is nearly caught up on titling, registrations and renewals, that started backing up in May when the new system came online.

Johnson County treasurer Thomas Franzen says employees have been working early, late and weekend overtime hours. Franzen was authorized to hire 16 more people to help with the backlog.

The Shawnee County motor vehicle offices continue to see a backup.

The grace period for people whose tags expired in June has been extended to July 13.

State revenue officials have notified the system's contractor, 3M, that it will withhold the final $4 million payment on the $40 million price tag of the system until issues including system response time and availability are resolved.

Those who are renewing tags at the Shawnee County courthouse are encouraged to use the park and shop garage located at 615 SE Quincy just across the street, west of the courthouse.

The garage costs $1 per hour.
