TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)-The smooth sounds of the Topeka Jazz Workshop Band captivated the crowd at Gage Park Amphitheater.

"We really have a great sound. It's something people can really enjoy,"said Tim Owen, lead trombone player.

"Jazzy, upbeat, something you can always tap your foot too and just kind of enjoy for an hour or so," said Meredith Owen.

However, what happened to the band a while back wasn't so upbeat.

"We lost our funding. This used to be a city funded with concerts in the park and along the way that funding got pulled," said Musical Director for Topeka Jazz Workshop Band, Ryan Simpson.

Topeka community members say they want the summer jazz concerts to continue. So, they are supporting the band by running in the Jazz in the Park 5k. After participants crossed the finish line, they indulged in a healthy dinner and all proceeds from it benefit the band's future concerts.

"I like the band, so it's a good cause to come out and support," said race participant, Meredith Owen.

"We want to keep the heritage of this band alive, its been around since 1961 and we want to preserve that and keep it vibrant," said Tim Owen.

The event was a success and the Topeka Jazz Workshop Band's performance will surely end on a high note.

The Musical Director says the Topeka Jazz Workshop Band's next concert will be at Gage Park Amphitheater on July 14th.
