HOLTON, Kan. (WIBW) - A Mayetta man is behind bars, accused of attempted murder.
Jackson County authorities received a domestic violence call around 6 pm Saturday from the Holton Wal-Mart.
During the investigation, they learned 35-year old Brian Eugene Vaught had earlier held the female victim and her five-year-old daughter at his residence north of Mayetta. Authorities say Vaught threatened them with firearms and twice strangled the mother until she was unconscious.
The Jackson County Sheriff's Office says the woman was able to escape long enough to have Wal-Mart staff call 911.
Vaught is charged with attempted first degree murder, kidnapping, aggravated battery, assault, intimidation, and weapons violations for the incident at the home. He's also facing charges of domestic violence and resisting arrest by Holton Police for the call at the Wal-Mart.
He's being held at the Jackson County Jail on $500,000 bond.
