Background

Three men shot in northeast Shawnee County Friday are no longer under special guard at Stormont-Vail Healthcare hospital, where they continue treatment.

Shawnee County Sheriff's deputies were stationed there for safety and investigation purposes.

Police were called to 4335 NE Meriden Road where three men had suffered gunshot wounds at about 6:45 p.m. on Friday.

Patricia Abbott who lives nearby on Meriden says this part of northeast Shawnee County is usually pretty quiet.

"This is the first time I heard about anything in this area. It's usually pretty quiet and friendly," she said.

That is, until last Friday night.

Neighbors say a gunshot victim had left the scene at 4335 Meriden, apparently seeking help.

The man stopped at a couple of homes, including the Flanagans', who weren't there at the time.

"We think he was coming straight across, right through here," Tom Flanagan said, referring to one of the victims and motioning from the house on 4335 Meriden to his driveway, just a few houses south.

"He was bleeding pretty good," Flanagan said. "See those spots?"

Specks of blood still line the Flanagan driveway, all the way up to the front door.

The man walked another half mile down Meriden to 39th Street, holding his gunshot wound, neighbors say, before AMR personnel and law enforcement caught up with him, in front of the Abbott's home.

"We were inside watching TV and we noticed three police cars right out on the street and there was a guy with the policemen standing there." Abbott, who lives at the corner of 39th Street and Meriden, said.

"We first thought he was getting arrested for something," she said. Her husband Rex Abbott walked outside and talked to the police and noticed the man was bleeding, she said.

The victim told deputies he and some others had been shot, Abbott said.

"There was blood all the way down [the street] and it started getting heavier, I think, toward our house." Abbott said.

The owner of 4335 NE Meriden, where it all started, said he was inside and didn't see the shooting, but believes it might have stemmed from a dispute among his house guests.

The Abbotts, who have three young boys, say they continue to worry.

"Who shot them and where might they be?" Patricia Abbott wondered.

She said she was also concerned about weapons.

Authorities had searched the area again on Saturday. It is not clear if a weapon had been found.

Officers have not released any additional information on the victims and their identities.

No arrests have been made at this time.
