TOPEKA -- Jim Colson doesn't officially begin his job as Topeka's 2nd City Manager until August 27th, one month from today, but he's not waiting to make his inroads on living here.

Colson, the deputy manager for the Phoenix-area suburb of Glendale, Arizona, landed the job Tuesday night on a controversial 6-3 vote by the Topeka City Council. Three members raised red flags about his starting salary of upwards of $175,000 a year.

His predecessor, Norton Bonaparte, was making $137,000 annually at the time of his paid-out departure from Topeka and his journey to embattled Sanford, Florida to become city manager there before the Trayvon Martin killing rocked that city.

Colson is here, and was seen smiling for television cameras, as he makes the rounds talking with City Hall's department heads and taking care of everyday matters, such as searching for a place to live.

Colson told us he's very impressed with how friendly Topekans are, and would like to help the Council create "the best possible Topeka."
