GEARY COUNTY, Kan. (WIBW) -- Geary County officials say malfunctioning brakes caused a tractor trailer delivering ice to catch fire on Interstate 70 Tuesday.
It happened at 9:30 AM at Exit 303. A semi hauling a box trailer loaded with bags of ice was making deliveries in the area and Geary County Undersheriff Tony Wolf says the driver was at the bottom of the entrance ramp onto I-70 East when the brakes on the truck locked up.
The friction caused the tires to spark and the trailer to catch fire. Crews responded to extinguish the flames.
Wolf says the driver was not injured and managed to unhook the front of the truck from the trailer to save it from the fire.
The trailer was a total loss but officials at the scene noted that a majority of the ice stayed frozen and intact.
