GEARY COUNTY, Kan. (WIBW) -- Tragedy struck on Interstate 70 on Thanksgiving when an Abilene man was killed in a crash with his teenage son inside the car.

The accident happened just before noon at Exit 301 for Fort Riley in Grandview Plaza, one mile east of Junction City.

Troopers with the Kansas Highway Patrol say 48-year-old John Kaneaster of Abilene, the driver of a 2004 Chevy pickup truck, was westbound when he lost control of his vehicle.

He drove off the roadway into the median, reports stated. His truck crossed the median and both eastbound lanes of Interstate 70 and continued across the eastbound 301 exit ramp and entered the south ditch. The pickup then struck a tree and rolled over.

Witnesses told WIBW that they saw the truck “totally airborne" before it made impact with the tree.

The victim's son, 13-year-old John Kaneaster Jr. of Florida, was taken to nearby Geary Community Hospital in Junction City with “possible fractures,” sources said at the scene.

Authorities could not say where father and son were going at the time of the accident.

It is unknown what caused the deadly crash but officials say it’s possible Kaneaster fell asleep behind the wheel.

An autopsy will be conducted, according to the Geary County coroner.

The Kansas Highway Patrol is handling the investigation.

Kaneaster and his son were wearing seat belts, according to the KHP crash log online.
