Hundreds See Hawks Take Flight To New Orleans

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - The alumni band played, little cheerleaders danced in the aisle and people of all ages sported their crimson and blue, wishing their Kansas Jayhawks well as they took flight for New Orleans.

The team took a bus from Lawrence and arrived at Forbes Field around 4:20 pm Tuesday. They walked a rope line, high-fiving fans as they quickly made their way to board a charter flight to their Final Four date in New Orleans.

Several hundred fans packed the Forbes Field terminal to send off the team.

"They're focused but they're excited. It's a pretty good combination," Coach Bill Self said as he walked through the terminal.

The biggest cheers were reserved for Self and All-American Thomas Robinson, who called the sendoff "crazy."

"I didn't expect all this," he said. "I thought we'd get off the bus and get on our plane."

Asked how he'll balance fun and focus for the team, Self replied, "The fun is over after today."

The players agreed, with several saying their embarking on a business trip.
