TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)-The federal government shutdown has immediately made an impact in the Capital City.

Closing signs are taped to the front doors at Brown vs. Board of Education. This site along with other federal agencies in Topeka are closed due to the federal government shutting down.

The Kansas National Guard has also felt the impact. Adjutant General Lee Tafanelli says nearly 700 full time workers, both guard and civilian employees, have been furloughed-about half of them based in Topeka.

"We have our families and employees in this matter, it's a significant morale issue, and that is something I'm very concerned with long term," says Tafanelli.

Major disagreement between U.S. House Republicans and Senate Democrats over the Affordable Care Act caused the federal government to shut down.

"Well I don't think it should have happened, and we voted for them and they are up there and they should do their job, but so far they haven't done it this year," says Topeka citizen, Lee E. Williams, Jr.

"It's a little scary, my husband is in military so things are a little bit iffy right now," says Topeka citizen, Jessica Addington.

Tafanelli says the amount of time the federal government takes to make decisions could potentially make matters worse.

"The longer it goes the greater impact it has on our operational readiness," says Tafanelli.

Tafanelli says the Kansas National Guard has about 2,100 full time workers in all.

On a national level, 800,000 workers were sent home Tuesday due to the government's shut down.
