TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A reminder from Helping Hands Humane Society--- if you lost your pet over the past week, check with them!

The loud noises of fireworks often scare pets, and the shelter typically sees an influx of animals picked up as strays over the 4th of July holiday.

Margaret Price with the Humane Society says they had about 33 calls this morning from people who'd lost their pet or found a stray. Most had been reunited when the shelter called them back.

Price says they are thankful that they didn't have as many pets come in this year as in the past.

"I'm hoping over the past few years that we've gotten the word out on how to keep your animals safe," said Price. "People are considering them, people are keeping them safe, so it really helped us a lot, so we are really thankful for the community for doing that. For taking very good care of their pets during this time of the year."

Shelter officials recommend physically coming down to look for your family pet since descriptions can vary and animals can appear similar.
