TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Topeka City Council members have set a date to hear a proposal expanding the scope of the city's Human Relations Commission.
Councilman Chad Manspeaker introduced a measure to add sexual orientation and gender identity to the list of targets for which the commission works to eliminate prejudice.
A first reading for the ordinance is set for September 10th, with plans for a vote September 17th.
Also during Tuesday's meeting, Councilman John Campos announced he won't approve city transactions after the fact. Campos tells 13 News the issues should be brought to the council before the money is spent.
Council members routinely have an agenda item to approve the prior week's expenditures. Tuesday's vote on the item was 8-1, with Campos opposed.
Campos says he'd like the process reexamined. He says council members need to revisit the budget more frequently, with more in-depth reviews weekly and monthly. Right now, he says, departments could continuously overspend the amounts approved in the budget.
