HOLTON, Kan (WIBW)--Almost six years since Master Sgt. Bernard "Bernie" Deghand's death, Memorial Day still isn't any easier for his family.

Deghand lost his life in the fall of 2006 serving in Afghanistan. The 42-year old Shawnee Heights graduate left behind children, parents , grandparents, siblings, a wife and many friends.

Since his death the Fort Leavenworth and Holton VFW branches have honored him every year at a statue dedicated in his memory.

Family members say the service means a lot to them and reminds them that Deghand's life has meaning.
