TOPEKA. Kan. (WIBW) - The Shawnee County Sheriff's Office was searching an area on the east side of Lake Shawnee Monday afternoon, after receieving reports just after 3 p.m. of two cars exchanging gunfire.
One of those vehicles crashed into a utility pole, in the roundabout at 45th and Croco Road. Authorities say the vehicle failed to negotiate, around a roundabout.
Sheriff's officials say the passenger got out of that vehicle and, as he tried to run off, people in the second vehicle fired more shots at him. Authorities say the man was shot in the leg. He was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The driver of the wrecked car was not injured, according to authorities.
The Kansas Highway Patrol helicopter was assisting in the search for the second vehicle, and its occupants. Law enforcement also had areas near 41st and East Edge and 29th and Croco blocked.
Officers located several shell casings at the scene. The wrecked car was hit by several bullets.
A vehicle not involved with the shooting, was hit by a bullet in the 2900-block of SE Croco Road.
Shawnee County Parks and Recreation told 13 News all lake facilities remained open and accessible Monday afternoon.

Today after the high school and middle school students were dismissed a Shawnee Heights School bus was traveling on Croco Road between the intersections 29th and 45th street when gunshots were reportedly exchanged between two vehicles. The driver radioed the transportation office and law enforcement was alerted. No students were in direct danger. No students were injured and the bus continued its' route delivering all students to their appropriate destination safely.
We will have counselors and administrators available tomorrow morning to speak with students if necessary.
