(WIBW) - Several area groups are marking Thursday's National Depression Screening Day with free checks for the mental illness.
Free screenings for adults, children, and seniors are available from 1 to 4:30 pm Thursday at Topeka's Valeo Behavioral Health Care, 330 SW Oakley, on the second floor. referrals and educational info will also be available.
Flint Hills Community Health Center in Emporia also will offer screenings. Their event will be from 10 am to 3 pm Thursday at FHCHc, 420 W. 15th Ave. in Emporia. No appointments are necessary.
FHCHC says the free, confidential screenings are meant to be informational, not diagnostic. They will have mental health professionals available to review results. People unable to attend during Thursday can call FHCHC at 620-342-4864 to schedule an appointment.
More than a half million people each year are screened for depression.
