Groups Spend $167K Helping Kansas Democratic Candidates

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ Seven groups have spent a total of nearly $167,000 over seven days to help Democratic candidates as campaigns for the Kansas Legislature near their end.

Campaign finance reports filed this week by the organizations with the secretary of state's office disclosed the spending. It was aimed at helping seven state Senate candidates, 10 state House candidates and even one candidate for the Jackson County Commission. The weeklong period covered by the reports ended Thursday.

With Tuesday's election approaching, the Bluestem Fund political action committee spent almost $72,000 on mailings, phone banks and other get-out-the-vote efforts.

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee spent $31,000 on phone banks, and the Kansas Democratic Party spent $28,000 on mailings. Three other party groups and the PAC for the state's largest teacher's union also disclosed spending.
