TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Lessons in leadership were celebrated Friday.

A graduation luncheon was held for the 2012 class of Leadership Greater Topeka.

Three dozen local business leaders and students spent the past several months learning about various aspects of the Topeka community, from business, to government, to service groups. They also applied their talents to various service projects of their own.

Amanda Hughes was the planning committee chairperson for this year's session. She says it's hoped those who go through the program will be inspired to be more involved in their community.

Former Gov. John Carlin was keynote speaker for the lunch. He expressed his concern with the state of politics today. He said citizen leaders taking action will be what changes the tone. The Democrat also predicted bitter battles during the upcoming Republican primary elections, which he says is not good for the state.

Leadership Greater Topeka is sponsored by the Greater Topeka Chamber of Commerce.
