Gov Brownback Announces Money For Crime Reduction Efforts in Kansas

Topeka – Kansas Governor Sam Brownback today announced the grant recipients of the 2013 Federal Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) program. Local and statewide criminal justice agencies and support organizations will receive $2,256,261 for their criminal justice projects.

“Kansas has an impressive network of agencies and organizations committed to making our state a safer place to live, work and raise a family. JAG funding helps strengthen their partnerships for safe communities and enhance the state’s capacity to prevent, solve and control crime,” Governor Brownback said.

The Kansas Criminal Justice Coordinating Council (KCJCC) oversees the criminal justice federal funding made available to Kansas through the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, Bureau of Justice Assistance. The KCJCC includes the Governor, Attorney General, Supreme Court Chief Justice, Corrections Secretary, Superintendent of the Kansas Highway Patrol, Juvenile Justice Authority Commissioner and Kansas Bureau of Investigation Director.

“These grants will help improve public safety and provide critical assistance for victims of crime.” Attorney General Derek Schmidt and KCJCC Chair said.

KCJCC oversees the Federal Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program in the State of Kansas. Entities eligible for JAG grant awards include units of state and local government, Native American Tribes, and nonprofit, community, and faith-based organizations.

JAG funds are intended to support:

· Law enforcement programs

· Prosecution and court programs

· Prevention and education programs

· Corrections and community corrections programs

· Drug treatment programs

· Planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs

· Crime victim and witness programs

Below is the list of the 2013 JAG grant recipients:

Barton County, Family Crisis Center $59,000

The Family Crisis Center will provide outreach services for survivors of domestic and sexual violence, and forensic interviews for child abuse victims.

Brown County Sheriff’s Office $6,738

The Brown County Sheriff’s Office was awarded funds to update dispatch computers and establish a data backup and recovery program.

Ellis County, Northwest Kansas Community Corrections $91,673

Northwest Kansas Community Corrections will utilize grant funds for surveillance officers, drug testing, and substance abuse treatment.

Finney County, 25th Judicial District Community Corrections $50,471

The 25th Judicial District Community Corrections will utilize grant funds to provide substance abuse counseling for offenders.

Harvey County Sheriff’s Office $8,533

The Harvey County Sheriff’s Office was awarded funds to purchase thermal imaging cameras.

Johnson County, Sunflower House $13,537

Sunflower House was awarded funds to provide child abuse victims forensic interview services.

Leavenworth County, Brothers In Blue Reentry $85,320

Brothers In Blue Reentry was awarded funds to provide drug treatment and prevention and education programs to Lansing Correctional Facility inmates as well as parolees.

Lyon County, SOS Inc. $24,311

SOS will utilize funds to provide domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking services to victims in rural Osage County.

Reno County, Hutchinson Police Department $24,000

The Hutchinson Police Department was awarded funds to purchase a mobile automated license plate recognition unit.

Scott County, Western Kansas Child Advocacy Center $51,304

The Western Kansas Child Advocacy Center will utilize funds to provide forensic interview services.

Sedgwick County, Bel Aire Police Department $21,150

The Bel Aire Police Department was awarded funds to purchase mobile computer terminals and in-car video systems.

Sedgwick County, City of Valley Center $9,662

The City of Valley Center was awarded funds to purchase patrol cameras.

Sedgwick County, Kansas Big Brothers Big Sisters $51,791

Kansas Big Brothers Big Sisters was awarded funds to expand mentoring services for children of incarcerated parents.

Shawnee County. 3rd Judicial District $17,200

The 3rd Judicial District was awarded funds to identify, evaluate, and engage in treatment addicted offenders who meet Drug Court criteria.

Statewide Agencies:

Kansas Attorney General’s Office $120,115

The Kansas Attorney General’s Office was awarded funds for a prosecutor position that will assist with cases in a 17-county region of southeast Kansas.

Kansas Governor’s Grants Program $86,300

The Kansas Governor’s Grants Program will act as the fiscal oversight agency for a collaborative crime reduction effort centered at the local level.

Kansas Bureau of Investigation $803,317

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation was awarded funds for the Southwest Kansas Drug Task Force serving an 18-county region; retaining positions for statewide strategic methamphetamine intervention and for managing the Kansas Incident Based Reporting Section; and assessment of the KCJIS security architecture.

Kansas Department of Administration $102,806

The Kansas Department of Administration was awarded funds for the director of the Kansas Criminal Justice Information System (KCJIS).

Kansas Department of Corrections $180,611

The Kansas Department of Corrections was awarded funds to retain staff for the Office of Victim Services Division.

Kansas Highway Patrol $248,743

The Kansas Highway Patrol was awarded funds to purchase tasers for troopers and to retain technical security auditor positions.

Kansas Juvenile Justice Authority $28,679

The Kansas Juvenile Correctional Complex was awarded funds to install security cameras at juvenile correctional facilities.

Kansas Supreme Court $195,000

The Kansas Supreme Court was awarded funds for the assessment of the technology infrastructure and operations impact of migrating to centralized case management.
