RILEY COUNTY, Kan. (WIBW) -- Friends have come to the aid of a Riley County family who must now find a new place to call home after losing theirs to a fire.
Tracy and Lynn Sohnrey and their four children escaped a fire at their home on McDowell Creek Road Sunday night.
Officials say the blaze started at or around the wood stove located in the basement of the 123-year-old house. The family was home at the time and escaped safely as flames spread to the rest of their home, destroying the back portion and main floor.
Firefighters hauled 27,000 gallons of water to the scene from Manhattan and were assisted by crews from Geary County and Fort Riley.
The family is staying with a relative for now but they need a permanent place to live and have lost nearly all of their belongings.
Those close to the Sohnreys have set up a fund at Alta Vista State Bank to help them through this difficult time and get them back on their feet.
Friends call them a "very deserving" family.
