FROM TOPEKA LIBRARY -- Our free computer classes are one on the most valued and used services the library has to offer with an average of 360+ attending a training every month. People of all walks of life take these classes, from the grandparent wanting to talk to their grandchildren on Facebook, to the job seeker wanting to learn or brush up on their skills.

Our trainers Becky and Kate are available to address individual questions during more than a dozen Drop-In sessions offered each month. So head to the library and be computer savvy in no time!

1. The Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library offers free computer classes for the beginning computer user to those who are ready to connect to more advanced skills. Every week, you may enroll in the class that best suits your needs, or attend the drop-in schedule and try-out what you need with the help of one of our training specialist.

3. We teach beginning classes for those new to computers at a relaxed pace and we encourage you to take the classes in the order for a good, basic understanding.

Taming Your Mouse – learn the proper way to hold move the mouse, single and double clicking, right button clicking, dragging and dropping, scroll bars, radio buttons and checkboxes.

Beginning Windows – learn about the keyboard, desktop, icons, start button, task bar, calculator and WordPad.

Introduction to Word Processing (MS Word) – learn to set margins and tabs, change fonts, spell check, select text, save and delete files.
Internet Introduction – learn basic Internet functions and visit some interesting sites.

Email with Yahoo! Mail – learn to address, compose, reply to and forward messages.

4. After the beginning classes, you will be ready for Beyond the Basics when you are ready to hone your tech-savvy skills. Choose from:
a. Google it – search for pictures, videos, maps and stuff to buy on the Internet. See your home with Google Maps. Use Google Docs for word processing, spreadsheets, etc.
b. Look it up on the Internet – learn to use the library’s online catalog and other online resources available at the library.
c. Facebook for Beginners – Sign up for an account and learn the basics of this popular social networking site.
d. Do you HULU? – explore current trends for entertainment on the Internet including You Tube videos, Hulu television, movies, webcams, museum tours and more.
e. Cut, Copy & Past – learn to select text, cut, copy and past in MS Word.
f. Word Graphics – draw shapes, use clip art, WordArt and text boxes.
g. Editing Digital Photos – learn to crop, rotate, resize, reduce red eye, play with color and use special effects on your digital photos using free online software.
h. Power Point – create dynamic presentations.
i. Excel – introduction to spreadsheets, cells, columns, rows, Auto Sum, simple functions or formulas.
j. Access – introduction to databases from a template or from scratch.
k. WinWay Resume Writing – create a professional resume using this simple-to-use program that is used by the Topeka Workforce Center.
l. Apple iPad for beginners – bring your iPad and learn about settings, searching and the apps.
m. Free eBooks @your library – learn how to use your eReader with our free eBooks service.
