MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) -- A Fort Riley soldier is facing several charges after police say he led state troopers and officers on a high speed motorcycle chase through Manhattan and out onto Interstate 70.

Captain Kurt Moldrup with the Riley County Police Department says Specialist Andrew Brenneman, 22, of Junction City, was caught by a Riley County police officer Sunday afternoon at 3 PM making an illegal turn from 14th Street onto Poyntz Avenue in Manhattan on his 2002 yellow Suzuki motorcycle.

When the officer initiated the traffic stop, Moldrup says Brenneman sped up and made is way to Fort Riley Boulevard/K-18, heading out of Manhattan.

Moldrup says near Ogden, the officer stopped the chase due to safety issues. Brenneman, he says, was passing cars in opposing lanes of traffic in a construction zone, continuing at a high rate of speed.

A trooper with the Kansas Highway Patrol picked up the chase at Eureka Drive and Scenic Drive off of K-18 and Brenneman finally stopped and pulled over near mile marker 306 on I-70.

He was arrested and charged by both the Kansas Highway Patrol and Riley County Police Department with Speeding, Reckless Driving, Driving While License Suspended and Fleeing/Attempting to Elude. His bond was set at $10,000 and as of Monday morning when RCPD held a briefing with local media outlets, Brenneman was still confined in the Riley County Jail.

Brenneman is assigned to Troop C, 1st Squadron, 6th Cavalry Regiment, Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Infantry Division.

Captain Moldrup did not know why the soldier’s license had been previously suspended.
