FORT RILEY, Kan. (WIBW) -- Two of Fort Riley's top marksmen are gearing up to face off against some of the world's best sniper teams.

Staff Sergeant John Jasper and his spotter, Specialist Phillip Ryan, have been training for months to compete with the best of the best at the 12th annual U.S. Army International Sniper Competition at Fort Benning, GA, putting their skills to the test against some of the world’s best sharp shooters.

Jasper and Ryan- from the 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team- trained for the event with other snipers from the battalion on Tuesday, Oct. 23, at a Fort Riley range. WIBW caught up with the soldiers as they prepare to represent the Big Red One at the competition.

The intense and continuous five-day competition will pit them against active-duty, Special Forces and Ranger snipers from across the Army as well as those from the Marines, Navy, Air Force, international/allied militaries, law enforcement and National Guard and Reserve units.

"You might have to engage a target from a helicopter, you might have to engage a target from a vehicle or from alternate firing positions- kneeling, standing, from the side of a building. They just try to replicate those shots and give it a time frame, a couple of minutes to do that, throw in some stress with running, carrying a heavy load. And then whoever does it best wins," Jasper said.

Each sniper team will participate in 10 to 15 combat-related events.

"Just by competing, these guys are going to do well and they’re going to learn a lot. Not only that but outside of competing, they’re going to participate in a great training event which the Sniper School puts on. We do some great training here at Fort Riley but when you get down there and you’re among other sniper elements, you’re going to learn a lot and it’s a phenomenal training environment," said LTC Roger Crombie, 1-16 Infantry Commander.

Fort Riley’s team is ready to show what they can do in the competition which goes from Nov 2 to 7 at Fort Benning.
