Former Shawnee County Sheriff Running For Senate Seat

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -A new candidate has put his name in the hat for the seat in the state senate's 18th distrtict, and he's a well known name.

Retired Shawnee County Sheriff Dick Barta made his announcement official this afternoon.

Dick Barta will join two-term incumbent Democratic Senator Laura Kelly and GOP candidates Gary Parnell and Cristina Fischer in the race to serve northern Shawnee County and all of Wabunsee county.

With his background in law enforcement, he feels ready to tackle the issues within the senate.

"I always tried to treat citizens with respect and courtesy and uphold public trust in the community. I spent my life serving in law enforcement. Failure was never an option no matter how difficult the situation," said Barta.

He went on to say, "Those same things that worked as sheriff, being fiscally responsible, upholding values of our community and serving Shawnee County, those are needed i believe, in our state senate."

The former sheriff sees one problem in particular that most kansas would like to see put to an end. He says, "We've all seen the gridlock and bickering in our state senate and Kansans deserve better than that. It's time for a new approach, one that works to find solutions and solve problems.

The Republican Primary between Cristina Fischer, Gary Parnell and Dick Barta will take place August 7th.

There is currently no democrat running against incumbent Senator Kelly.
