Former Lawmakers Call For Restoring School Funding

News release from Traditional Republicans for Common Sense

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - The fight over school funding brought together dozens of former political leaders.

Nearly 50 moderate Republicans calling themselves "Traditional Republicans for Common Sense" spoke out at a news conference Wednesday. They are former lawmakers like former SRS Secretary Rochelle Chronister, who acted as the group's spokesperson at the news conference.

The group wants lawmakers to restore funding cuts to public schools. They oppose Gov. Sam Brownback's proposal to eliminate the state's income tax. Chronister callied it a "moral decision," saying such a system would have the rich paying less while the poor pay more.

Brownback has said his tax reform proposal would simplify the tax code while sparking business growth.

The group says a combination of sales, income and property tax has all Kansans paying into the system.
