TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A historic Topeka building has new life.

City leaders joined in cutting the ribbon Wednesday on the newly-restored Pioneer Motive Power Building. The former office building for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe railroad at 1001 NE Atchison was remodeled into apartments for senior citizens.

It's the latest of several buildings Pioneer Group, Inc. has repurposed. President Ross Freeman says they're among his favorite projects.

"It has great financial rewards and it has great emotional rewards," Freeman said. "It's just an undertaking that I think is better than anything else."

In a nod to the building's history, the Santa Fe band provided live music at the event, which included tours of the building.

Freeman says he's pleased with how the neighborhood has supported the project.
