Power Lines And Trees Down In Lyon County After Storm, Flooding A Concern

EMPORIA, Kan. (WIBW)--Power lines and trees were down as storms tore through Lyon County Friday night.

Winds as high as 60 miles per hour were reported.

Lyon County Emergency Management is reporting on Facebook that K99 south of Emporia is closed due to water covering the road. The Kansas Turnpike has opened the flood gates according to KVOE.

The National Weather Service is reporting that Concordia saw a daily maximum rainfall record for August 2nd. They had 4.42 inches of rain fall. The previous record was 2.92 inches set in 1927.

The Cottonwood River was out of its banks Friday as forecasts called for more rain in the coming days.

KVOE is reporting the Cottonwood River at Emporia is just under 25 feet with the flood stage at 20 feet. The Cottownwood River at Plymouth is currently at 33.4 feet with a flood stage of 32 feet.

"Flooding may become more of an issue over the next week as rain, heavy at times, continues to be in the forecast on an almost daily basis," said Drew Switzer, WIBW Meteorologist.

Heavy rainfall early Friday morning caused many creeks, streams and rivers climb out of their banks in North-Central Kansas around the Concordia, Abilene, and Clay Center areas.

Several roads were also closed in Lyon County, including Road 160 between Roads G and J, Road H between Roads 160 and 165, Intersection at Road F and Road 170 (Merrick Tower Road), Road F5 between Roads 160 and 170, Road 155 between Road G and Road F5, Intersection of Road G and Road 150, Intersection of Road H and Road 150, Road C between Highway 50 and Road 180, Road B5 between Highway 50 and Road 173, Area north of Road 140 to Roads E, F, G and H, Road A between Highway 50 and Road 180, Road A and Road 155, Road B north of Highway 50, Road 140 east of Road J, 1400-1500 Blocks of Road 140, Road H and Lockerman Road, Road 150 west from K99, Road J south from Road 160, Road M between Roads 137 and 150, Road 150 between Roads M and N. KVOE is reporting the following roads are closed: J from Road 160 south, Toad 150 between Roads E and F, Roads M and N and west of K99, S from Road 130 north, T between roads 130 and 150, and M between Roads 137 and 150.

There was 1 water rescue performed Friday morning in Dickinson County near Talmage because a motorist drove into two feet of running water, according to officials.
