TOPEKA -- Beautiful birds who often stand on one leg, have been making the rounds this May all through Topeka.

And the flamingos you may be seeing are coming from the flock of Good Kids at Topeka's Countryside United Methodist Church.

The teens hopped over and around our welcome sign at WIBW-TV last week, leaving a few of the plastic pink flamingos on our front lawn. They also attached a note with Ralph Hipp's name on it, announcing that he too, had been "flocked."

Actually, the teens are flocking people around town, all to raise $5,000 or more for their summer teen retreat. Far from a church get-together for fun, the youngsters in youth group will help with house remodeling projects and building shelters for people who've been living in poverty at Mountain Top, Tennessee, in the mountains of the eastern part of the state.

Shawnee Heights 8th grader Taryn Walter told Ralph Hipp: "We're going up to Mountain Top, Tennessee to help some kids that have been through poverty and go out and build some stuff for some people..:

And how do the flamingos help them raise money to go to Tennessee?

"They buy insurance if they don't want pink flamingos in their yard. They decorate 'em, put clothes on 'em.. necklaces, hats and gloves on 'em," Taryn explained.

Ralph asked Washburn Rural Sophomore Kaitlyn Ruiz how the effort to help the people near Knoxville makes them feel.

"Pretty good.. 'cause you get to see these people's faces after and make them smile.. What do their faces look like when you help people? Most of them cry, happy tears, definite gratitude."

CUMC Youth Director Devin Slimmer is the brainchild behind the flamingo flocking project.

He, along with our Good Kids, welcome you to call at 806-3033 to check on whether a potential "victim" may have purchased flock insurance. Donations are welcome to be sent to the youth group at:
