TOPEKA, Kan. – Kansas First Lady Mary Brownback Tuesday announced details of a library grant that is available for libraries participating in the Read Kansas Read summer reading program.

The Kansas Book Festival, in partnership with Read Kansas Read and the State Library of Kansas, is offering a $500 grant to one winning library that participates in the Read Kansas Read program. To be eligible, a library must have at least one student send their reading log (local library log or a Read Kansas Read log) to Read Kansas Read by August 1st. A drawing will be held to determine the winner.

The goal of Read Kansas Read is to keep school-aged Kansans (K-12) reading over the summer months, when the formal learning process ends for many young Kansans.

“The $500 grant is aimed at encouraging and rewarding local libraries for getting kids involved in summer reading,” First Lady Brownback said. “The importance of promoting literacy cannot be understated. The partnership between the Kansas Book Festival and Read Kansas Read makes sense. Both of these programs do a great job highlighting the joy of reading.”

Jo Budler, the State Librarian of Kansas was pleased about the incentive now available for the libraries across the state.

“I am sure that the library community will be very pleased to learn about the First Lady’s decision to offer a grant to the libraries,” Budler said. “But the really great news is that libraries are helping our young residents to avoid reading skills’ summer slide.”

Completed reading logs should be mailed to the following address:
Attn: Read Kansas Read
Statehouse, Ste. 169-W
300 SW 10th Street
Topeka, KS 66612

Or e-mailed to infodesk@library.ks.gov.
