TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Sixty people took advantage of Topeka Municipal Court's "bench amnesty program" on its first day.

This week, anyone with an outstanding bench warrant for their arrest can have it withdrawn. A bench warrant is given when a person fails to appear in court or meet with court members.

Municipal Court Administrative Judge Vic Miller says the program is a legitimate officer, not a "sting operation" where officers are looking to make arrests.

“This is no scam,” Miller said. “The very purpose of our amnesty program is to give people a chance to settle their affairs with the Court without the necessity of arrest.”

Miller also said people shouldn't let a shortage of funds deter people from meeting with the court.

“For anyone that can’t pay off their debt to the Court , we will work with them in setting up a payment schedule to fit their budget," Miller said. "All we ask is for people to make a good-faith effort to pay and stick to the agreement they make.”
