TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Fire did $75,000 damage to BNSF's chemical testing lab Monday.
Topeka Fire crews saw heavy black smoke coming the roof vents of the building when they arrived at the BNSF Rail Yard, 100 NE Jefferson Tfwy., just before 12:30 pm Monday.
Lab workers had safely evacuated by the time they arrived. Crews quickly put out the blaze.
Fire investigators say the fire started in the fuel testing containment area. They say it was due to a failure of the area's ventilation system.
Fire officials say no chemicals posed a risk to the public during the incident. No injuries were reported.
Of the damage, $15,000 was to the structure while $60,000 was to contents.
The Topeka Fire Department sent three engine companies, three truck companies, two chief officers, a safety officer, and an investigator to respond to the incident.
