Fire That Destroyed Topeka Home Ruled Intentional

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Topeka Fire officials say a morning fire at an Oakland neighborhood house was intentionally set.

Neighbors say they heard an explosion before seeing flames engulf the structure at 568 Northeast Winfield just before 6 am Friday.

Fire crews say no one lived in the home.

Investigators say the blaze started in the front interior of the structure. Fire officials would not expand on just how the fire was set, although they did tell 13 News the actual cause did not appear to be natural gas-related.

Four engine companies and three truck companies responded, along with a shift Commander, a battalion chief, two fire investigators. Kansas Gas Service also was called to shut off gas to the home.

Damage is estimated at $27,000, with the house a total loss.

No injuries were reported.
