KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) _ A southeast Kansas senator testifies that Republican Gov. Sam Brownback and his staff were involved late the legislative session to help end a redistricting impasse.
Sen. Jeff King, an Independence Republican, testified Tuesday as a trial opened in federal court in a lawsuit over redistricting.
King said Brownback and Senate Majority Leader Jay Emler asked King and others to work with the governor's staff to draw new maps. One of those maps is similar to one offered to three federal judges to consider.
The judges are drawing new district boundaries for the Kansas House and Senate, State Board of Education and four U.S. House districts because lawmakers finished their annual session without doing so.
