(KHI News Service) - The family of a former Kansas State University football player who committed suicide while at Larned State Hospital has filed a lawsuit against hospital officials.
The Kansas Health Institute news service reports Michael Lykins hanged himself on September 6th, 2011, shortly after he was admitted to the hospital.
His children and his father, attorney and former Board of Regents member Dan Lykins, filed a lawsuit on August 23rd in Shawnee County District Court.
The family accuses several hospital officials of allowing Michael to be discharged, even though he was mentally unstable and his release had not been approved by the court. He was returned to the hospital five days later, when he hanged himself.
The family tried to move a hearing in the case to Pawnee County, where Larned is located, but that motion was denied Thursday.
