TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) The 30th Annual Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony took place today on the south steps of the statehouse grounds.
It was a difficult day for everyone at the memorial service, as fellow officers saluted a hero, killed in the line of duty.
Kansas law enforcement officers paid tribute to Sgt. David Enzbrenner, who served for the Atchison Police Department for 24 years.
Kerri Enzbrenner, David's Widow, says he understood the hazards of the job and was proud to serve and protect his community and family. "You couldn't have asked for a better husband, a better father, and he respected his job and thought alot of his job of being in law enforcement" says Kerri.
Sgt. Enzbrenner was killed while assisting code enforcement officers serving a nuisance order. A man unrelated to the order walked out of the crowd and shot him without warning.
David was just forty-six years old and leaves behind his wife, Kerri, and three daughters.
