TOPEKA, Kansas (WIBW) -- The open burning season begins Tuesday, October 15, and those who plan to burn need to take the proper precautions before lighting that first fire.

The Topeka Fire Department is accepting residential open burning permit applications through November 26.

Residents planning to burn can apply online through the City of Topeka's website at www.topeka.org and click on the link: "Click here to apply for a residential burn permit." Residents can also apply by calling the Topeka Fire Department at 785-368-4000 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday - Friday.

The burning site must be inspected prior to burning to receive a permit. Materials to be burned must be piled at the site of the proposed burning before the inspection takes place. Residents applying do not have to be home during the inspection.

Any questions can be referred to the Topeka Fire Department's Fire Prevention Division at 785-368-4000.
