TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- The Topeka Police Dept. (TPD) is investigating a possible explosion in north Topeka that forced them to close a stretch of NW Central Ave. and call in the bomb squad early Thursday evening.

According to a TPD spokesperson, officers first were called about a suspicious person in the area shortly after 4:30 p.m. About the same time, they also were told of a possible explosion in the area that could have been a "cherry bomb."

Officers found a suspicious device in lying in the road in the 1300 block of NW Central Ave. They temporarily shut down the road and called in the bomb squad to see if the device was dangerous.

They were eventually able to determine that it wasn't an explosive device, but did note there was evidence an explosion had taken place in the area.

Anyone with knowledge of this incident, or of any other crime for that matter, is encouraged to call the Topeka Police Department at 785-368-9551 or Crime Stoppers at 234-0007.
