TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ The Kansas state school board's outgoing chairman says he'd like the board to consider new science standards by the end of the year.

The timetable outlined Tuesday by State Board of Education Chairman David Dennis would end an expected debate over evolution before newly elected board members take office.

Kansas and other states are working on new standards designed as nationwide guidelines. A first draft, released last month, describes evolution as a well-established, core scientific concept.

Dennis, a Wichita Republican, is one of three Kansas board members not seeking re-election this year. It's possible six of the board's 10 members could be new after the November elections.

But Kansas Education Commissioner Diane DeBacker said she doesn't expect the final draft of the science standards to be ready until next year.
