TOPEKA, Kan. (RELEASE) Members of the Topeka community can join City staff at the Topeka Zoo for the year’s last Conservation Connection, at 6:30 p.m., this Thursday, November 14th, at the zoo’s Gary K. Clarke Living Classroom. The program is free for all attendees.

This segment of the continuing series will focus on what the Topeka Zoo contributes to conservation on both a local and global scale.

“Everything from how the Zoo selects animals for its exhibits, to how we interact with our guests, has to support our mission of wildlife conservation and education,” Zoo Director Brendan Wiley said. “We are excited to share with the community some of the progress we have made over the last couple of years.”

For the past few months, a Facebook naming contest has been generating votes to name a baby Golden Lion Tamarin that was born at the zoo this past July. Votes can still be submitted before 5:00 p.m. Thursday by liking the zoo’s Facebook page www.facebook.com/TopekaZoo and following the link to the voting page. The winning name will be announced during Thursday evening’s presentation. Golden Lion Tamarins are just one of the endangered species the zoo works with to help produce a genetically sustainable population.

In addition to working with onsite conservation programs, zoo staff also participate in programs in the state of Kansas. And through fundraising efforts, the zoo is able to support at least one conservation program on nearly every continent.

“We are a zoo that believes we can truly inspire positive change in the world,” Education Curator Dennis Dinwiddie said. Dinwiddie is chair of the zoo’s Conservation Program. “We want to tell the story of how Topekans, by supporting their zoo, are making a difference here at home and half a world away.”
