EMPORIA, Kan. (WIBW) - Among the nearly three hundred Emporia High School students receiving their diploma at the William White Auditorium Sunday was one particularly lucky young woman.
18-year-old Mariah Serrano beat the odds to make it to graduation.
13 News has been following her story for three years - since the day Mariah was involved in a terrible car-semi collision on May 29, 2009.
She suffered head-injuries and two collapsed lungs. The accident caused severe trauma to Mariah's brain, and through the years, she's had to re-learn how to walk.
Now she's re-learning how to talk. She communicated with 13 News today by spelling out that she feels "ecstatic" about graduating.
"Stepmom, mom and I, we've all decided the sky's the limit!" her dad Ed Serrano said.
Mariah's future plans, like many of her classmates, include volunteer work and attending college.
