EMPORIA, Kan. (WIBW) - Emporia fire crews planned to remain on the scene of a house fire through the night Wednesday into Thursday to continue working to put out hot spots.

The fire broke out at 2304 East 6th just after 4 pm Wednesday. A photo from a 13 News viewer showed a large fireball and thick, black smoke soaring into sky.

Fire officials say flames engulfed vehicles, grass and the house. Several propane tanks exploded in the process. The house was destroyed.

No one was home at the time. Fire officials say the owner has a primary residence in the Kansas City area.

Neighbors say crews are dousing a house next door to prevent the flames from spreading. Firefighters with Emporia, Americus, Hartford, Neosho Rapids and Olpe all assisted at the scene.

Authorities were directing traffic away from Road 170 and Old East Hwy. 50 between East 6th and I-35 due to the heavy smoke associated with the fire.

There were no reports of any injuries. Fire officials say the investigation into what caused it is just getting underway.
