TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - The Topeka Rescue Mission received a big donation just in time for the holiday season.

Students at Eisenhower Middle School wrapped up their week-long canned food drive Tuesday.

The food drive was used as a way to build character and connections with the community through a bit of friendly competition.

Each grade level competed against each other to provide food for the upcoming holiday season.

"A lot of people that utilize the rescue mission are a lot less fortunate than us here at Eisenhower," said eighth grade history teacher Thomas Crubel. "We like to do it before Thanksgiving just because Thanksgiving is a busy holiday and it involves food and family so we want to make sure there are families out there that have stuff to eat."

The sixth grade won the drive this year, donating about 425 food items.
