EMPORIA, Kan. (WIBW)- An Emporia State University debate team came home to cheers for making history.
Students cheered as the team walked through the Emporia State University Union.
"It's been very exciting,” said ESU Junior debate winner, Elijah Smith.
"I think this is really exciting not for just me but for the students who ever dreamed or aspired to be in this place. I’m truly overwhelmed," said ESU Senior debate winner, Ryan Wash.
"It’s still just very surreal to me, " said ESU debate director, Sam Maurer.
Surreal to some but the reality is they are the first team ever to win not one, but two national championships in the same year.
"They are excellent at debate because of their talents going into rounds but also the way they have been able to link up and be good teammates,” said Maurer.
And now that they have received their trophies, the debate duo plans to attend graduate school and someday be debate coaches, but for now they are enjoying the spotlight.
“I only thought to win one ever and for us to win both of them and have the ability to ignite the crowd is just ridiculous,” said Wash.
