Dornwood Park Ball Fields Now Light Up The Night

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -Dornwood park has experienced some rough times over the years but a recent rejuvenation from volunteer workers and the county has put some life back into the park.

The ballfields in particular are beginning to see some of those efforts paying off.

A year ago thieves took all the excitement of night time baseball away from the young ball players at dornwood park when they stole the expensive copper wiring that operated the ballfields lights and scoreboard.

With the help of the newly formed Shawnee County Parks and rec fitting the fields with aluminum wiring that is able to be funneled underground and more secure.

Fans and ball players at Dornwood can play under the lights once again and it hasn't taken long for users to notice the benefits...

Catcher the "Da Bears" Gareth Wendt says, "It's great becaue now we can play night games and we don't have to get up early and play games, it's cooler and easier to see when i'm catching."

Teammate Trevor Schattilly says, "With better lights we can see at night instead of playing in the dark when you can't see at all."

Sponsor and coach Jim Parrish sees the positivity from the new lights as well, saying "It helps with excitement now that people see we are willing to put money back into the park. Before, it hurt us with recruitment but now that they see what is going on they are paying more of an interest."

The shawnee county parks and rec put in a little over 50 thousand for the lights and scoreboards which the kids are extremely greatfull for.
