TOPEKA – Kansas Democrats gathered in all corners of the state to attend the 2012 Kansas Democratic Presidential Preference Caucus and support President Barack Obama.

"While GOP presidential candidates are busy spending millions of dollars attacking each other and pandering to the extreme reaches of their party, Kansas Democrats united across our state today to support the President and discuss the issues that matter to Kansans: protecting public education, creating quality jobs, and ensuring a fair playing field for all Kansans," said Joan Wagnon, chair of the Kansas Democratic Party.

Today's Democratic Caucus attendees began the selection process for delegates to the Democratic National Convention. A total of 496 delegates were elected at today’s caucuses with all delegates pledging their support for President Obama. These delegates will next meet on Saturday May 5, 2012 to select the delegation that will attend the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte this September.

"Kansas families and voters are ready to change the direction of our state and our country,” Wagnon said. “Kansas Democrats want to move forward and create jobs that will put money in the pockets of working and middle-class families. To make this change, we need to elect Democrats at every level who believe in the importance of education, opportunity, and responsibility. Today’s caucuses are the first step towards making that change a reality.”

Democrats who did not get a chance to attend today's caucus will still have a chance to be selected as at-large delegates by filing a statement of candidacy with the KDP by May 21 and then attending the Kansas Democratic State Convention on Saturday, June 9.
