TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A group of cross-country cyclists pedaled into Topeka Monday.

Nearly two dozen cyclists with the Journey of Hope wheeled their way to the TARC grounds, 2701 SW Randolph.

The group from Pi Kappa Phi fraternity left Seattle on a nine-week journey to Washington, D.C., raising money and awareness for people with disabilities. Along the way, they stop for "friendship visits," meeting the very people who inspire the ride.

Rider Locovico Marchesini calls the visits his favorite part of the ride. He says it's uplifting to meet the people for whom they're riding. He was inspired to take part because of a relative with autism. He says he's happy to ride to spread the word that people with disabilities deserve the same opportunities as everyone else to live life to the fullest.

The riders average 75 miles a day. They'll arrive in Washington August 5th.

This is the 25th year for Journey of Hope. It's a program of Push America, which is the fraternity's national philanthropy. Over the years, the ride has raised more than $15 million to enhance the lives of people with disabilities.
