Curbside Recycling Set To Launch In Shawnee County

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - After more than a year of talking about it, curbside recycling is days away from reality in Shawnee County.

Public Works Director Tom Vlach told commissioners Thursday that pickup begins next week for refuse customers who received blue cards in the mail, and the week of the 14th for red card customers.

Recyclables will be picked up every other week on a customer's regular trash day.

All Shawnee County Refuse customers will see a $4 monthly increase in their bills with the launch of the service, regardless whether they use it. But Vlach thinks it will catch on. He says the process is about as simple as it can be, with customers not even required to separate different types of recyclables. Once people realize how easy it, Vlach says he believes it will be quite successful.

The county has responded to one early concern raised by refuse customers. Vlach says customers are now able to request a smaller-size container for recycling pickup. Some people had complained the large-size containers given to all customers were too big to easily fit in their garage or other storage area. People may call 233-8200, extension 6057 or email recycling@snco.us.
