TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - People in Shawnee County are realizing how simple it is to recycle.

Shawnee County Public Works director Tom Vlach spoke to county commissioners Thursday about the positive impact recycling has had on the area. Since curbside recycling launched in January, Vlach says, the program has taken in 2,618 tons of material. That's about 1000 tons more than last year.

Vlach did report one dim spot. He says the total number of Shawnee County Refuse customers is down more than 1000 from last August. Refuse rates increased $4 a month for all customers with the launch of curbside recycling.
